Summary: This unit will teach students about communicating respectfully and how to show respect when providing feedback to a peer. Students will create a musical composition that reflects their feelings about respect and tolerance. Students will also write about what they have learned about respect and tolerance. As a culminating activity, teachers will combine their writing and musical composition into a digital story illustrated with work generated in the visual art classroom about the theme of respect and tolerance.

Summary: Students observe and explore hyperbola, circle, ellipse, and parabola in their everyday world through math and art. Students will recognize, analyze, and graph the equations of the conic sections (parabolas, circles, ellipses, and hyperbolas) and use the forms to create a sculpture.

Summary: Students integrate music, writing, illustration, and narration to produce a book commercial to promote a favorite book from the Froggy series. In the process of the unit students learn how media can influence choices and how image and music can convey meaning.

Summary: Students are introduced to the principle of mathematical nets by describing, classifying, and deconstructing 3-D forms in math and using the concept of nets for designing and creating a form in clay.

Summary: Students will gain knowledge and understanding of Day of the Dead celebration through art and the Spanish language.

Summary: The essential question, “Can I be  an agent of change?” was the question explored by fifth grade students as they researched social issues from Minnesota history. Students combined their research and personal meaning of the issue through poetry/image and translated it to a spoken word presentation.

Summary: How do authors and artists express themselves and what influences shape their work? Students write their own personal narrative story that is based on a real-life experience. The final story is expressed through a mixed media art work
